Laboratory investigations are an essential tools for a consultant for diagnosis of a disease. The reliable lab investigations are not only play a vital role in diagnosis & treatment of patients but also impose substantial financial burden on a patient in the existing socio-economic scenario.

Looking upon all these considerations Prof. Muhammad Azam Yousfani conceived the idea of founding a self- sufficient, self-sustaining state-of-art diagnostic Laboratory in PUMHSW for providing quality lab diagnostic service on lowest charges to the patients of the city. The idea was to establish a diagnostic laboratory that should not only be a "not-for-profit" laboratory, but, it should generate sufficient funds to sustain and maintain itself independently. This idea was translate into reality with active support of political leadership particularly Esteemed Dr. Azra Pechooho and the DR lab was inaugurated in 2009 which is not only a gift for people of the city but it is yet another feather to PUMHSW.

PUMHSW DR Lab is equipped with automatic analyzers for chemistry, histopathology, microbiology and hematology reports, immune-assays and molecular biology. The DR lab is the pioneer in providing PCR tests in the city. It is providing quality lab services on nominal charges which are lowest if compared with any other commercial lab with strict quality control measures. The DR lab generates funds that are sufficient to meet its expenses for chemical and maintenance expenses and salaries for its staff. The Chairperson Pathology Department of PUMSHW supervises and the teaching staff of the Pathology Department oversees its operations. The Board of Governors chaired by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Azam Yousfani and Members that include eminent citizens of Nawabshah provide the guidelines and directions for its operations.

The DR lab is providing service to about 50,000 patients per annum instantly with a wide range of lab tests. Further expansion of lab on latest technologies like making it fully automatic, establishing cutting-edge blood banking, Hb electrophoresis etc are actively under consideration. It is also planned to establish various collection points in the far flung areas of not only Shaheed Benazirabad district but in the adjacent districts of Naoshehrofroz, Dadu, Sanghar and Khairpur in order to cater for services to poor socio-economic group of people.
